Definition of Musical  Terms so far...(And episodes appearing in)

PUIRT À BEAUL (EPS 1, 8)
(pronounced [pʰurˠʃtʲ a ˈpial̪ˠ], literally "tunes from a mouth") is a traditional form of song native to Scotland (known as portaireacht in Ireland) that sets Gaelic lyrics to instrumental tune melodies. Historically, they were used to accompany dancing in the absence of instruments and to transmit instrumental tunes orally.

SEÁN-NOS (EPS 1, 7)

(/ˈʃænoʊs/ SHAN-ohss, Irish: [ˈʃan̪ˠ n̪ˠoːsˠ]Irish for "old style") is unaccompanied traditional Irish vocal music usually performed in the Irish languageSean-nós singing usually involves very long melodic phrases with highly ornamented and melismatic melodic lines, differing greatly from traditional folk singing elsewhere in Ireland, although there is significant regional variation within Ireland. Sean-nós songs cover a range of genres, from love song to lament to lullaby, traditionally with a strong focus on conveying the relevant emotion of the given song. The term sean-nós, which simply means "in the old way", is a vague term that can also refer to various other traditional activities, musical and non-musical.

WAULKING SONGS (EPS 1, 2, 5, 6, 7)

Waulking songs (Scottish Gaelic: Òrain Luaidh) are Scottish folk songs, traditionally sung in the Gaelic language by women while fulling (waulking) cloth. This practice involved a group of women, who traditionally prepared cloth, rhythmically beating newly woven tweed or tartan cloth against a table or similar surface to lightly felt it and shrink it to better repel water. Simple, beat-driven songs were used to accompany the work.

REEL À BOUCHE (EPS 2)

An Acadian/French-Canadian Reel. The title translates as "mouth music reel." Dance music was sometimes lilted in several cultures, notably in parts of Scotland and Ireland, and, by extension, in Cape Breton, Quebec, and other places in North America. Nonsense syllables sufficed for words, although sometimes mouth music had distinct sets of lyrics. Such tunes are also known as turlute in Quebec. Conjecture has it that such tunes were sung for dancing in the absence of an instrument, or when the musicians were incapacitated by fatigue (or drink!), but it was also employed as a mnemonic to make it easier to commit tunes to memory.

NOS LOWEN (EPS 2)

Nos lowen (former spelling noze looan) is a style of Cornish-Celtic dance, and associated music and events similar in style to the Breton fest noz but featuring only Cornish dances. Nos lowen is Cornish for 'happy night'.

BOTHY BALLADS  (EPS 5)

Bothy ballads are songs sung by farm labourers in the northeast region of ScotlandBothies are farm outbuildings, where unmarried labourers used to sleep, often in harsh conditions. In the evening, to entertain themselves, these bothy bands sang.

CAPSTAN SHANTY (EPS 5)

The capstan (pronounced caps'n) is an upright, barrel-shaped winch used for heavy lifting. Depending on the size of the capstan, between 4 and 300 men push the capstan bars to wind a cable, lifting anchor, cargo, or a vessel. Capstan shanties, with their steady rhythms, are suited for these long, repetitive tasks. Many capstan shanties use waltz or march time. The main goals are to encourage steady progress, alleviate boredom, and maintain morale.

CAOINEADH (KEEN) (EPS 5, 7)

Keening is a traditional form of vocal lament for the dead in the Gaelic Celtic tradition, known to have taken place in Ireland and Scotland. Keening, which can be seen as a form of sean-nós singing, is performed in the Irish and Scottish Gaelic languages (the Scottish equivalent of keening is known as a coronach). Keening was once an integral part of the formal Irish funeral ritual, but declined from the 18th century and became almost completely extinct by the middle of the 20th century.

FEST NOZ (EPS 7)

A fest noz (sometimes hyphenated as fest-noz; "night festival" in Breton) is a Breton traditional festival, with dancing in groups and live musicians playing acoustic instruments. Although it is all too easy to write off the fest nozou and fêtes folkloriques as modern inventions, most of the traditional dances of the fest noz are ancient, some dating back to the Middle Ages, providing a way for the community to grasp hold of its past and relish a deep sense of being with ancestors and with place.
